This tension is exacerbated by stress, changes in atmospheric pressure, fatigue, etc. As the auditory canal is located just behind the temporo-mandibular joint, any continuous irritation at this level or any tension in the muscles of the tympanum may cause ringing or whistling noises in the ears (tinnitus).
